The process of becoming and improving as a world-class competitor is never-ending, no matter what sport or career path you take.

Here is a list of 9 things I believe contributed most to… accelerated success over the past 18 months:

  • Natural maturity
  • His personal journey to never stop searching for what is best
  • Braver
  • Sticking to one process rather than constantly looking for silver bullets, the one thing that will make the difference. Acceptance that no one thing is it - rather, nearly all the "silver bullets" are part of the solution.
  • Settling into a process of just getting better at one way of playing changes the level of patience, stress and approach to the hard work
  • Perseverance to the point where losses are truly seen as something to learn from rather than a reason to beat himself up
  • Consistency of ticking his boxes daily
  • Confident enough in his game and mind to have constructive and honest discussions with me and the support team, therefore facing problems head on rather than sweeping difficult issues under the carpet, hoping they will somehow disappear
  • Enjoying free expression of his talent rather than only having fun when winning

Just as he had to learn that no one or 9 things are all it takes to succeed in a complex world where so much influences our maturing process, I can say that these 9 are big keys to the puzzle.

Remember, we are never the finished product. The striving and learning to be better is on going and a wonderful goal to wake up to every day.
