When things go wrong

Today is a short one. Whenever things are going badly, it is well to remember that nothing is permanent. Great people and world events come and go - and everybody eventually dies.

Rather than this being a depressing thought, it is actually comforting

Whilst we are alive we can learn that no matter how tough things are, time moves on and things change.

There is always hope because nothing stands still. You can be proactive, or you can be proactively patient - waiting to see where things move before doing something.

5 keys to helping us through adversity

  1. Put one step in front of the other each day, and you will eventually get to a different place in your mind. That step can sometimes be waiting to see what unfolds (proactive patience).
  2. A good question to ask is what would I advise if I was looking down on this situation.
  3. A good thought is that if you lived in a different country, you almost certainly wouldn’t even know about this difficulty. This can calm us as it can bring perspective.
  4. Life happens and is not fair, so wishing for fairness is wasting energy. Accept and then make a plan to take the first small step forward. Forget about the mountain to climb, it’s too much for the brain to handle. Chunk it down.
  5. Resiliency is built through doing. If you live through something enough you will build up tolerance.

In summary, life will happen whether you go about it with a good attitude or a bad attitude. Good and bad things will happen regardless so why not see the good more often and be stoic (less emotional) about the challenges.

Everything passes in time. What you learn about yourself in the tough times can make or break you, but this is a choice. Choose resilience - it gets easier. Resilience builds resilience.
